An air curtain sends a controlled stream of air across an open doorway. It can reduce the exchange of indoor and outdoor air and make it harder for some flying insects and dust to enter. It is a supplementary barrier, not an invisible door.
When an air curtain can help
- Retail or F&B entrances that remain open for customer access.
- Frequently used service doors between conditioned and warmer zones.
- Cold-room or back-of-house doors, using equipment designed for that duty.
- Loading or work areas where the manufacturer supports the opening height and environment.
Results depend on how often and how long the door is open, wind exposure, indoor/outdoor pressure, temperature difference, nearby supply grilles, and the traffic through the opening. A site with strong cross-drafts may need airflow and pressure problems addressed as well as an air curtain.
Selection starts with the clear opening
- Measure the full clear width of the opening.
- Measure vertically from the intended discharge outlet to the threshold.
- Record available mounting space, structure, ceiling bulkheads and signage.
- Note wind exposure, adjacent doors, supply-air grilles and door traffic.
- Check the model's installation height, air velocity, controls, noise and power data.
The discharge should cover the complete opening. If more than one unit is needed, the manufacturer or designer should confirm how adjacent air streams meet and how the units are controlled.
Do not turn one brand's model range into a universal rule

Do not select solely by nominal door width and height. Compare airflow, outlet velocity, noise, speed control, duty cycle, ingress protection where relevant, cleaning access, local support, and the manufacturer's mounting restrictions.
For F&B, it is one layer of pest control

Mounting and electrical supply
The support must carry the unit and operating vibration in the manufacturer's permitted position. Confirm structural backing, fasteners, service clearance, discharge angle, and access for cleaning. Do not hang the unit from decorative ceiling board or block required exits, signs, shutters, sprinklers or door operation.
Follow the exact model's supply arrangement. Do not assume every air curtain is hardwired or every model can use a nearby socket. Commissioning and maintenance
- Check that airflow spans the doorway without a dead zone.
- Observe performance with nearby doors and ventilation systems operating.

- Record the model, settings, manual, warranty and service access.
