Why does waterproofing matter so much?

A leak doesn't just damage your floor — it travels through the concrete slab and ruins your downstairs neighbour's ceiling, costing $3-10k to fix and damaging a relationship for years. Our 6-layer system (substrate, primer, two waterproof membranes, screed, adhesive + tile) is built to be redundant — if one layer has a pinhole, the other 5 still hold. We flood-test for 24 hours before tiling to prove the system is sealed.

How long is the bathroom out of action?

Single bathroom: 10-14 days end-to-end. Day 1-2 hack. Day 3 plumbing + electrical rough-in. Day 4-5 waterproofing (each layer needs cure time). Day 6 flood test. Day 7-8 tiling. Day 9-10 fixture install + grouting + silicone. Day 11-14 buffer + snag. Both bathrooms in parallel: 12-18 days (we stagger the trades). If you only have one bathroom, plan to shower at a gym or family's place.

Can we keep some of the existing tiles?

Honestly — no, and we'd advise against it. Partial retiling looks like patchwork (new + old grout colour never matches exactly), and more importantly, partial work means we can't redo the waterproofing properly. Half-done waterproofing is worse than no work — it gives false confidence. If budget is tight, we'd rather do one bathroom fully than two bathrooms half-way.

Our default is the Rubine range — German-engineered, made for the Singapore market, 5-year manufacturer warranty on most items. You can browse our Rubine product line covering ceramic basins, basin taps + mixers, toilets, vanity cabinets, shower systems, and accessories — all available through us at trade pricing. If you prefer Grohe, Hansgrohe, Kohler, TOTO, etc., we'll source those at retail + install. Customer-supplied (Taobao, Lazada) also fine — install only, no manufacturer warranty from us.

Can I relocate the toilet, basin, or shower in my HDB?

Accepted Answer

Within the existing wet zone — yes, easily. Shifting a basin 1.5m along the same wall, moving a shower head from one corner to another, repositioning the WC by up to 1m from the existing soil pipe — all standard. Moving the WC further than 1m (or to a different wall) requires the soil pipe to be rerouted, which often means HDB approval + a structural consideration (cutting into the slab is sometimes restricted). We flag any relocation that triggers approval upfront.

Do you handle the electrical too?

Yes — we're ME05 L1 licensed (the EMA licence class required for residential electrical work in Singapore). Bathroom electrical is specifically regulated: light points must be IP44 minimum, water heater needs a dedicated 30A ELCB-protected circuit, shaver socket must be installed at the right distance from the basin per BS 7671. We do the rewiring as part of the bathroom job — no need for a separate electrician visit.

How do I know your waterproofing won't fail?

Three safeguards. (1) We use SS 137-1 certified two-component cement-based membrane (the spec HDB itself approves for HDB wet areas) — not the cheaper one-component stuff. (2) Two coats applied at 90° eliminates the pinhole failure mode. (3) 24-hour flood test before any tile goes down — we open the gully, fill with 25mm of water, check downstairs neighbour's ceiling. If a single drop shows up, we redo the layer at our cost. Plus 12-month workmanship warranty on the waterproofing itself.

What if I have an aging-in-place need (grab bars, walk-in shower)?

Accepted Answer

We handle accessibility upgrades regularly — grab bars (need solid backing in the wall, not just tiles), walk-in shower with a low or zero kerb (the waterproofing detail is critical here), anti-slip floor tile (R10 or R11 rating), drop-down shower seat. Add roughly $1,000-2,500 on top of a standard bathroom reno for full accessibility. Worth doing at the same time as a planned bathroom job rather than as a separate retrofit.
