Aircon is dripping from the indoor unit. What should I do first?

Switch the unit OFF + put a towel/bucket under the leak. Most cases are condensate-drain clogs and don't require shutting off power at the breaker — but if water is dripping near the electrical compartment, do switch off the MCB. Then WhatsApp us with a photo + brand + model.

Is this an emergency?

Not a flooded-apartment emergency — water trickles from condensation, not from mains pressure. But: ceiling damage downstairs, mould growth, electrical risk if it reaches the PCB. Same-day fix where slots available is wise.

How much does it cost to fix?

Drain-line clog (most common): $80-130 callout + flush. Frozen-coil cause: $90-150 including thaw + filter clean. Drain-pan replacement: $100-160. Drain-line re-routing: $120-200. We diagnose on site + quote before extra work.

How long does the fix take?

30-45 minutes for a drain-line flush. 60-90 minutes for a thaw + restore-airflow job. 1-2 hours for drain-pan replacement. We aim to leave with the unit dry + tested.

Why does it only leak when the aircon has been running for a while?

Condensate buildup takes time to accumulate. If the drain is partially clogged, water flows fine for the first 30-60 min then starts backing up. Run-time matters.

Will the leaking damage the unit itself?

Usually not the unit — water doesn't go inside the electrical compartment in a typical leak. BUT extended leaking + drips onto the PCB or sockets below DOES create electrical hazards + can short the unit. Worth fixing this week, not next month.

What's the difference between leaking and condensation on the outside of the unit?

A few drops of moisture forming on the cold outdoor pipe (especially on humid days) is normal. Steady water dripping or pooling under the indoor unit is NOT — that's a fault.

Could it be that the unit needs a chemical wash?

Accepted Answer

Sometimes — heavy biofilm on the coil + drain pan can contribute to slow drainage. We'll tell you on site whether a chem wash ($150-220, see /services/aircon/chemical-wash) is the right call, or if a basic flush + service ($90) handles it.
