Why Is My Water Heater Leaking? (Singapore Homeowner Guide)

Introduction

A leaking water heater is a common issue faced by homeowners in Singapore. Whether you are using a storage heater or an instant heater, water leaks should never be ignored as they can lead to water damage, electrical hazards, or complete heater failure.

If you notice water dripping from your heater or moisture around the unit, it is important to identify the cause early and arrange for professional inspection if necessary.

Common Reasons Your Water Heater Is Leaking

1. Loose Pipe Connections

Over time, the water inlet or outlet connections may loosen due to vibration, pressure, or ageing fittings.

Signs:

• Water dripping from pipe joints

• Small puddles forming below the heater

• Slow dripping near the connection points

This is usually a minor plumbing issue that can be fixed by tightening or replacing fittings.

2. Faulty Pressure Relief Valve

Most storage heaters have a pressure relief valve that releases water when internal pressure becomes too high.

If the valve becomes faulty or worn out, it may leak continuously.

Signs:

• Water dripping from the valve pipe

• Heater working normally but leaking constantly

Replacing the valve usually solves the issue.

3. Internal Tank Corrosion

Older storage heaters may develop corrosion inside the tank. Over time, this can cause small cracks or holes that lead to leaks.

Signs:

• Rust stains on the heater

• Water leaking from the bottom of the tank

• Heater more than 8–10 years old

In this case, replacing the heater is usually the safest solution.

4. Damaged Heating Element Seal

For some heaters, the heating element is sealed with a gasket. When this seal deteriorates, water may leak from the element area.

Signs:

• Water leaking from the front panel

• Moisture around electrical components

This should be checked by a qualified technician.

Is a Leaking Heater Dangerous?

Yes. A leaking heater can potentially cause:

• Electrical short circuits

• Ceiling damage (for concealed heaters)

• Increased water bills

• Complete heater failure

If the heater is installed above a false ceiling, leaks may go unnoticed for some time, causing damage to the ceiling and surrounding areas.

When Should You Replace Your Heater?

In Singapore, most storage heaters last around 8 to 12 years.

You should consider replacement if:

• The heater is leaking from the tank

• The heater is more than 10 years old

• Repairs are becoming frequent

• Heating performance has decreased
